As a learning exercise, I created my first Google gadget. It's very simple. All it does is display a quotation that sites in an HTML file on our web server.

Gadgets can be used for nearly any information delivery task... special advertising, mortgage calculator, trend watching. It really depends on what you as a company decide to display in it.
